Full Description

House, probably of mid-late 18th century date. It may have orginally been the White Hart, which was burnt down in 1777, then rebuilt by Samuel Gundry as his home (1). Two storeyed house with attics of red brick house with rusticated stone quoins (2). It has a moulded eaves cornice and a panelled parapet wall. At first floor level is a central Venetian window with stone columns and pilasters and four square-headed sash windows. There are panels of vitrified brick between the windows. Two hipped dormers in attic. The ground floor has full width shop front. Originally there was a mid 19th century shop front confined to the right hand side of the building and a central doorway. In the early 20th century (between 1905-1909) the doorway was moved and the shopfront extended across the full width of the frontage. The fascia above the shopfront is supported on re-used 19th century Doric columns. A photograph of the earlier shop arrangement was published in the Bridport News in 1905 (3).
