Description

AC archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the site of a proposed Tourist Information Office on South Street, Bridport in June 2000. This comprised the excavation of two 2m by 2m machine trenches within the footprint of the proposed building on the South Street frontage. A recut ditch possibly dating to the late 12th/early 13th century was found running NE-SW across the northwestern part of the site in Trench 1. Another ditch running parallel to the South Street frontage was found further to the south in Trench 2. This cut the edge of a large pit which has been tentatively dated to the late 13th/14th century. (1) (2)
