Description

AC archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the site of a proposed Tourist Information Office on South Street, Bridport in June 2000. This comprised the excavation of two 2m by 2m machine trenches within the footprint of the proposed building on the South Street frontage. (1) (2) Trench 2 measured 2m by 2m across and revealed natural deposits at a depth of 0.37m, beneath modern deposits. The southwest quadrant of a large circular or oval pit was found cut into the natural. It had moderately sloping sides and an irregularly flat base and produced some late 13/14th century pottery. The east side was cut by a small ditch oriented N-S and containing medieval pottery. (2)
