Description

Twenty-nine 1m x 1m trial pits were dug in this field, revealing an average depth of soil of 0.40m above natural sand. Modern disturbance of the topsoil reached down as far as the natural sand in 12 of the trial pits. Medieval pottery was recovered from Trial Pits 003 and 009. A possible shallow feature was recorded in Trial Pit 014. Trial Pit 015, located over a cropmark, revealed the edge of a ditch with five distinct layers in its filling; this was partially excavated. Trial Pit 018, also located over a cropmark, revealed the edge of a ditch with one layer of filling, which was partially excavated.
