Description
The long barrow is situated 1500m west of Chettle village, at the north-east corner of the former Eastbury Park. The substantial mound is relatively well preserved and Lidar data has provided dimensions for this monument. The data suggests a length of 66m, a width of 27m and a maximum height of 4.5m. These measurements contrast the dimensions for this monument recorded in Historic England - 58m by 22m and a height of 3m. The survey area was divided into 20m grid squares and a gradiometer was set up to take readings every 0.25m along a traverse, with a traverse interval of 1m.
The survey Identified a positive linear anomaly (A) parallel to the east edge of the mound, representing a flanking ditch of the long barrow. It measures 52m long and 6m at its widest. Given the bulk of the mound, this suggests the ditch may have been of significant depth if the flanking ditches acted as sources of mound material.
