Description

Following a geophysical survey and trench evaluation undertaken in 2019, AC archaeology Ltd carried out an archaeological excavation in November 2021 in advance of a new housing development between Spa Road and Roman Road, Weymouth Dorset, on behalf of Stonehaven Holdings Ltd. This relates to Planning Application WP-19-00516-FUL. The trench evaluation undertaken in 2019 revealed evidence for both Iron Age (2nd – 3rd century BC) and Romano-British (mid-3rd to late 4th century AD) occupation in three of the trenches excavated. This activity included several Mid/Late Iron Age pits, and ditches considered to be part of a Romano-British field system. The subsequent archaeological excavation in November 2021 was limited in extent due largely to tree protection zones, and revealed limited evidence for further archaeological activity in one area of the site (Area A). This comprised of a single Iron Age refuse pit. A second area targeted (Area B) revealed no evidence for any archaeological activity. The area investigated is considered to represent the western extent of a more extensive Romano-British settlement that lies under existing housing on the south side of Roman Road and considered to be related to a possible port at Radipole.
