Description

Observations and recording by Lilian Ladle during excavation of a soakaway 1.5m wide and to an average depth of 1.3m revealed a layer of modern hardcore 0.2m thick over a black humic soil on top of natural deposits of yellow/orange sand with occasional pockets of white clay. Two linear features were observed. Ditch F1 ran in a west-east direction on the base of the trench. It was filled with the same black humic soil containing large fragments of brick and drainpipe, and was interpreted as a modern drainage ditch related to the building of the church (in the 1930s) or the church house (in the 1960s). Gully F2 was narrower and ran north-south. It had been cut by, and thus predates, Ditch F1.
