Description

NRHE: Five test pits were excavated following demolition of the former BEC carpet store. The majority of the site revealed compacted modern demolition materials directly overlying the naturally occurring sand, with the exception of a small area of in situ archaeology in the east of the site, off Lower St Alban Street, indicating medieval occupation. This small area, covering probably no more than 10m2 consisted of a dark occupation horizon, possibly a midden spread, and was cut through by a shallow gully terminal. No other archaeological deposits or finds were observed across the site area.
