Description

Monitoring of groundworks by Southern Archaeological Services (SAS), during the groundworks for a new dwelling on land adjacent to ‘The Ramblers’. The site's archaeological potential comes from a known, late 7th/ early 8th-century AD cemetery 75m to the south at Frome View. Groundworks were observed throughout the excavation of two soakaways, the house footings, garage footings, and during the creation of a new entrance and topsoil stripping. Two ditches were identified during the watching brief. The first linear feature was aligned northwest-southeast and stretched at least 16m long and over 2020m wide. No dateable finds were recovered from the feature however, making dating difficult. The second ditch, feature 10, did contain some patinated worked flint and unglazed sandy pottery, dated to the 13th-14th century. These two ditches were roughly parallel, and are aligned on the assumed route of the Roman Road. No evidence for a Saxon cemetery was observed on the site.
