Description

Observations and recording by Terrain Archaeology during the digging by hand of a small trench 0.9m square and 0.75m deep in the grass verge at the edge of West Walks. The deposits seen were the result of modern disturbance, but a yellowish-brown silty clay loam was seen at the bottom of the trench. This appeared to be undisturbed and may be the upper fill of the inner ditch of the Roman town defences. It was covered by a layer of loose soil containing 19th-century finds and above this was the possible remains of a former path.
