Description

Observations and recording during improvements to the footpath on part of Dorchester Roman Walls, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The groundworks comprised the regrading of the slope of the footpath, involving removal of the existing tarmac over 14.5m, reprofiling of the slope by machine fitted with a toothless grading bucket and trenching to provide a new stone revetment. Natural chalk was seen over the whole of the exposed area. No archaeological features were seen, and there was no trace of the Roman town defences although the site was on the outer edge of the projected course of the bank. The archaeologists on site concluded that any earlier archaeological remains had been removed by landscaping to form the town walks in the 18th century.
