Description
An archaeological evaluation in the form of three trenches was commissioned by Savills in relation to a planning application for a residential development which involved the demolition of an existing building and construction of two new dwellings. The site was located immediately adjacent to a scheduled monument known as The Leaze, a deserted medieval suburb of Wimborne and was also within 20m of Late Iron Age/Romano British features discovered in 2004. Each trench measured 1.6m by 5m and a further trench measured 1.6m by 8m, the positioning of these was revised on site due to site conditions. They were excavated by a tracked mechanical excavator with toothless bucket to the level of archaeological deposits or natural subsoil. Trench 1 contained a number of pit-like features and a post-hole dated from the 12th to 14th century, These were likely to be associated with domestic and industrial activity and the presence of large quantities of animal bone may indicate that butchery waste was discarded on site as well as tanning or glue manufacturing. There may also have been iron smithing present.
