Description

Observation and recording were carried out during the excavation of a trench for new drains being dug close to and through a Purbeck stone wall of indeterminate age. The trench was 11m long by 400mm wide by 600mm deep and was hand dug. Some finds were recovered from the upper soil layer only which included clay roof tile, oiron nails, Victorian and Edwardian glass and ceramics and a cartridge cap. One complete moulded glass medicine bottle with contents was found with the inscription 'Tilley, chemist, Wareham' and these were found to be in business from 1900 to 1907 in Wareham. The wall was dated to the early part of the 20th century. The bottle was donated to Wareham Museum.
