Description
A magnetometer survey was commissioned by AC Archaeology on behalf of the Lulworth Estate as part of a planning application. The northern part of the site had been outlined for residential development and the southern part contained scheduled remains of a Romano-British settlement. The survey was carried out using a SENSYS MAGNETO MXPDA 5 channel cart-system with 5 fluxgate gradiometers at 0.5m spacing. Four survey areas covered apx 37ha of the area directly north of the scheduled area. The results demonstrated that the main core of the archaeological features were located within the scheduled area covering 9.5 ha although anomalies showed evidence of unscheduled enclosures and pits in the north part of survey Area 1 (north east) and others less definable within survey Area 4 (north-west). There was also a linear feature extending across survey Area 2 into Survey Area 4.
