Description
Evaluation comprising the machine excavation of 21 trenches. One revealed a large pit, interpreted as a possible quarry pit of prehistoric date. Two other pits were recorded, one containing large quantities of crushed, burnt flint; these were interpreted as serving an industrial function of some sort, and were thought likely to be of prehistoric date, though no dating evidence was recovered. An arc of seven postholes, interpreted as part of a roundhouse, and seven undated ditches were also recorded.
A trench (Trench 19) across the line of the Roman road revealed a pair of parallel flanking ditches and a thin sorted gravel layer forming the metalling of the Roman road.
