Description
Observation and recording during excavation of footings trenches, reduction of levels, and a drainage trench for a replacement water purification plant and recycling centre. No archaeological deposits or features were seen in the foundation trenches for the recycling centre, but archaeological deposits were encountered during reduction of ground levels. These comprised four pits and a length - around 4m - of drainage gully. Pottery and worked flint of probable prehistoric date was recovered from 2 of the pits, and a third contained pottery of probable medieval date. A shallow and sporadic spread of occupation material was seen below the level of made ground, and had probably been truncated by later development. Three further pits and two ditches were recorded within the footprint of the water purification plant. Pottery and worked flint of probable prehistoric/Bronze Age date was recovered from a ditch and one of the pits.
