Description

Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation on the site of the proposed flood defences in Hamworthy Park in Hamworthy. The evaluation consisted of three machine-excavated trial trenches designated Trenches 1, 2 and 3. Trench 1 was located near to the entrance of the park and oriented WNW-ESE. It measured 4.1m by between 1.6 and 1.75m. The trench went to a depth of 0.34m. Trench 2 was in the northern part of the park, oriented WNW-ESE. This trench measured 7m by between 1.5 and 1.7m, and was excavated to a depth of 0.38m Trench 3 was at the far eastern part of the park and measured 7.65m by 1.9m, and went to a depth of 1.9m. The trenches were cleared by a small tracked excavator equipped with a toothless grading bucket. No finds were found in Trenches 1 and 2. The majority of finds in Trench 3 were modern, though a single piece of burnt flint was discovered, and a palaeochannel or ditch was also recorded. No archaeological features were exposed during this excavation.
