Description

AC Archaeology were commissioned to carry out an archaeological evaluation on land at Piddletrenthide in advance of planning application for a residential development. The excavation consisted of four trenches, located to sample the sites of the proposed buildings. Each trench measured 1.5m wide and was excavated to a maximum depth of 1.2m, or until the top of the subsoil, using a tracked mini digger with a toothless bucket. Pottery of later prehistoric date (1 sherd), pre-Conquest (1 sherd) and 11th century to modern was discovered. 64 pieces of worked flint were recovered. The material retained represents a mixture of prehistoric flint and debris from flint walls. 162 fragments of animal bone were recovered; nearly 70% of these came from one feature in trench 2. Various butchery marks were present on these bones.
