EDO5518 - Waddock Cross Prospect, Affpuddle; desk-based assessment 2003

A desk-based assessment was proposed in relation to a proposed exploratory borehole at the site. A rectangular area was designated for the assessment, consisting of a 500m wide corridor around the site of the proposed development area. The desk-based assessment made use of archaeological databases including the National Archaeological Record and the Dorset Sites and Monuments Record. It also studies contemporary and historic maps, relevant literature and a site visit of the study area, undertaken on 19th March 2003. There were no archaeological sites or findspots from the Upper Palaeolithic to the medieval period recorded within the area of study. Two archaeological sites of Post-medieval to modern origin lie within the study area. Waddock Farmhouse is a Grade II listed building of early 18th century date. There is also a series of three brick-built bridges called Hurst Bridges, over the River Frome, south of the site. These were built in 1834. The archaeological potential for the site is considered to be low and no recorded sites or findspots are in the immediate vicinity of the site. (No dates are given for the duration of works).
