Description

Border Archaeology was commissioned by Fieldfare Construction Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation in connection with planning application 2/97/747. The process involved the semi-demolition of buildings including late 19th and early 20th-century lean-to buildings. A programme of archaeological work included a desk-based assessment, evaluation, and a watching brief incorporating the recording of 13 test pits. The evaluation consisted of two trenches within the proposed development area. No significant archaeological deposits were revealed. The excavators concluded that topsoil had been removed and the site levelled prior to the laying of a tarmac surface, and this had removed most medieval or post-medieval archaeology. However, a probable medieval pit was identified in the southern part of Trench 1.
