Description

AC archaeology monitored the excavation of nine geotechnical trial trenches or testpits in the southwest part of Bridport in June 1997. The test pits were excavated by machine fitted with a toothed bucket, with the exception of TP3 and TP5, which were dug by hand. These test pits all revealed deep deposits of alluvial silt. In general, the alluvium contained no artefacts, although in a number of test pits post-medieval finds were recovered from the upper part of the sequence. Test pit 4 revealed part of a former river channel, infilled with modern material.
