EDO5013 - Abbot's Walk, Abbotsbury; monitoring of building works 1983

Laurence Keen conducted archaeological monitoring during building works adjacent to the Abbots Lodging at Abbotsbury in 1983. Several E-W aligned cist burials were recorded and the foundations of the south wall of chancel of the abbey church were exposed. 'The external southern face had been lost but enough remained to suggest the line of the wall, the position of the east end of the chancel, and the SW corner buttress…. A fine and decorated 12th century capital, no doubt from the abbey originally and apparently from the blocking of the east window of the parish church, the mullions of which were removed on ?1979, has been deposited in the county museum.'
