Description
An undated pit was discovered during renovation work at Marks and Spencer's, South Street, Dorchester in 1994, when a hole was excavated to construct an additional pier within the north east corner of the building. It was first discovered by Mr S Maclean, Building Control Surveyor at WDDC, then observed and recorded by Steve Wallis, Dorset County Council.
The pit was about 1m deep, with a dark loamy fill containing frequent flint nodules and other relatively large stones. Several fragments of animal bone had been recovered during the excavation. No dating evidence was found.
