Description
AC Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation at 36 High West Street, Dorchester in November 2005 in advance of a proposed residential development (1).
A single trench 2.3m by 1m was excavated in the garden of the property. The trench revealed deep soils overlying archaeological deposits and features of Roman date, including a demolition/ occupation layer with much unabraded pottery, sealing a linear feature filled with mortar debris cut into the natural chalk, at a depth of 1.85m below the ground surface. This may have been a robbed out wall trench. It was not further excavated (2).
