Description
Two cottages formerly stood on this site and down until about 1850-60 an apparently in situ Roman tessellated floor was used as the floor of the back kitchen or wash house (1). This floor was seen by both the Rev. W. Miles Barnes and Mr. Hogg. The latter records: "I recollect seeing, about 1850, a square pavement almost perfect in the back kitchen of a house occupied by Mr. Pitfield. The tesserae were black red and white, from 3/8 to 3/4in. square" (2)(3). Some fine tesserae were also found in the back gardens of this and a neighbouring cottage from time to time (4).
