Description

During the construction of Culliford House in 1865, Mr. J Galpin found a very hard, smooth, cemented roadway at the angle of South Walk and Icen Way, about 3 yards wide. It was traced and cleared all the way across his garden. It led towards the middle of town at an angle. It was partly under a bank or vallum which used to run along the north side of South Walk to Acland Road [1]. The road was recorded as running for 65 yards in a WNW direction from the SW corner of the house [2].
