Description
Following the identification of extensive crop-marks to north of Maiden Castle in 1968,fieldwalking revealed a scatter of Roman pottery from 1st to 4th century. In a field north of Bush Road Cottages fieldwalking revealed a scatter of building debris and pottery including some tesserae, roof tile, Samian and 1st century and 3rd-4th century coarsewares. A one acre enclosure integrated within the pattern of the crop marks was selected for test excavation during 19-20th September 1970.
The trench was located just east of the NW corner of the enclosure and exposed the enclosure ditch. The ditch was up to 1.3m deep and 4m wide with a truncated V-profile. The finds suggest a 1st century AD date for this enclosure.
