Description

Two trial trenches (FR13N, FR13S) were excavated by Wessex Archaeology as part of the evaluation of the course of the Southern Dorchester By-pass in 1987 (1). These trenches were sited to investigate soilmarks and/or geophysical anomalies (2). Neither trench revealed a great density of archaeological features. Trench FR13N revealed a single shallow ditch aligned N-S, a possible Roman corndrying oven in the edge of the trench and a tree hollow. Trench FR13S also revealed a single shallow ditch aligned N-S, possibly a medieval or later field boundary. The only other features were a number of natural tree hollows.
