Description

The excavations known as Trumpet Major II entailed the excavation of footings for an extension to the Trumpet Major Public House, Alington Avenue, Dorchester, by the Trust for Wessex Archaeology in September 1987. The overburden was removed by JCB and the trenches excavated by hand. The trenches were only extended where burials were encountered. Some features including a shallow scoop, associated postholes and a possible pit probably dated to the 1st century AD or earlier. A number of late Roman features were also found, including traces of small gullies and post-holes. Seven Late Roman extended inhumation burials were also found, three of which were in nailed wooden coffins. No grave goods were recovered. Two post-Roman or medieval post-holes were also identified.
