Description

Terrain Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation of St. George's Churchyard, Fordington, in June 1999, in advance of the reduction of the ground level and the erection of a new fence. Two one-metre-square test pits were hand-dug in the churchyard at the east end of St George’s Church. Trench 1 was located 5m to the NE of the east end of the Nave and 1m from the churchyard wall. It measured 1m x 1m across and was dug to a maximum depth of 0.6m. A series of levelling layers associated with the extension of the east end of the church in 1907-8 were exposed. No earlier archaeological layers were encountered.
