Description
An archaeological field evaluation, conducted by AC Archaeology on November 16th 2005, examined a parcel of land on the Poundbury West Industrial Estate, Dorchester, Dorset. The site lies close to the Iron Age hillfort of Poundbury Camp and was recently occupied by light industrial buildings, demolished as part of the current redevelopment. Two trenches were excavated, each measuring 10m in length and 2m in width.
Trench 2 was aligned approximately E-W, located towards the north of the proposed development site and excavated by machine to a maximum depth of 3m on to the top of the natural chalk. 0.4m of modern rubble and aggregates overlay 2.6m of rubble and modern Made Ground. No archaeological features were observed.
