Description
An archaeological field evaluation, conducted by AC Archaeology on November 16th 2005, examined a parcel of land on the Poundbury West Industrial Estate, Dorchester, Dorset. The site lies close to the Iron Age hillfort of Poundbury Camp and was recently occupied by light industrial buildings, demolished as part of the current redevelopment. Two trenches were excavated, each measuring 10 m in length and 2 m in width.
Trench 1 was aligned approximately N-S, located towards the west end of the proposed development site and excavated by machine to a maximum depth of 1.1m. 0.3m of modern rubble and aggregates overlay 0.7m of weathered chalk. A single modern pipe trench was observed in the base of the trench and two modern ceramic drains were encountered during excavation. No archaeological features were observed.
