Description

A watching brief was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology during the redevelopment of the property at 45-46 South Street, Dorchester, which runs right through from South Street to Trinity Street. After demolition, the site was cleared down to the chalk bedrock at the eastern end but a 12m wide terrace 3m high was left at the western end, alongside the Trinity Street frontage. The archaeology of the whole site had been destroyed by 19th-20th century landscaping associated with the construction of a large Georgian style townhouse, 'The Hollies' and its attendant cellars and gardens. Furthermore, several large fuel tanks had destroyed any earlier deposits at the western end of the site.
