EDO3742 - Dorford Baptist Church, Dorchester, Trench 2

Trench 2 was one of 3 evaluation trenches excavated by Terrain Archaeology in November 2002 in advance of redevelopment of Dorford Baptist Church, Bridport Road, Dorchester. Trench 2 was located to the south of the church, adjacent to Bridport Road and was oriented roughly N-S. It measured 4.8m x 1.1m and was dug to a maximum depth of 1.25m. Trenches 1 and 2 were excavated by machine. A large linear feature, aligned approximately N-S, was interpreted as part of the eastern edge of one of the defensive ditches of the Roman town of Dorchester. The fill of this feature contained some Roman pottery and tile. However, subsequent observations on the site in November 2004, suggested that this was probably not part of the ditch, but another large disturbance.
