Description

Two machine trenches, each 1.5m wide and no greater than 15m long, were positioned at right angles to each other along the line of the proposed development. Trenches were excavated using a toothless ditching bucket under constant archaeological supervision. Recording was carried out using Wessex Archaeology rcording sheets, include full graphic and photographic records. A sample of each feature type was excavated and recorded. All artefacts were retained from excavated contexts, except those undoubtedly of recent or modern date. Bulk environmental soil samples were taken for plant macrofossils and small artefacts from appropriate sealed and dated contexts. Fieldwork was carried out on 12th August 1994. The underlying geology is chalk interspersed with flints. Funded by Dixon Scaffolding Ltd.
