Description

SY98SW MORETON STEEPLE 9/242 20.11.59 Parish Church of St Michael GV I Parish Church. C12 origin, enlarged in C16 and C17. Restored, and chancel rebuilt c1855. Stone walls, stone slate roofs with coped gables. Nave, chancel, north transept, south vestry, south porch, west tower. Tower, C16, of two stages, with string course. Projecting stair turret on north. Plain parapet. 2-light mullioned windows to belfry, with stone louvres. West doorway blocked. Large traceried window above this. South porch c1855. Vestry C16 - originally a chapel. South wall of nave has three C15 square-headed 2-light windows and one high level window at west end. South doorway C12, of two orders, with plain imposts and square jambs. North transept, C17, has, in east wall, a 4-centred arched doorway, with Coat of Arms of Lawrence quartering Washington over. 3-light square-headed windows. In north wall of nave, one lancet window and blocked doorway. Internally, nave has plastered barrel vault with moulded ribs and bosses with Coats of Arms of Lawrence quartering Washington - renewed. Other roofs C19. Font C13. Altar rails early C19. Two bells on tower floor, one C16, one C17. The Lawrence family. Lords of the Manor since the C16 had married into the Washington family in 1381 and their Coat of Arms incorporates the Stars and Stripes. Stone boundary wall to churchyard, which contains several C18 and C19 headstones. RCHM Monument 1. Listing NGR: SY9113680905
