Description

ST 7814 STURMINSTER NEWTON PENNY STREET (NORTH SIDE) Vine House, including front garden wall and gate piers. 8/175 4.10.60 G.V. II House, C17 range to left with c 1700 wing to rear and C18 addition to the right (RCHM). Ashlar and rubble, tiled roof with stone slate verges, gabled to left and half-hipped to right. Stone stacks to ends of original range and rear of C18 addition. 2 storeys and attic, 5 bays, Original range ground floor has one 3-light and one 4-light square labelled stone mullioned window with hollow chamfered mullions and jambs and leaded-lights. Fenestration pattern repeats on the first floor. Some early glass. 2 hipped dormers in roof with 3-light wooden casements with leaded-lights. C18 addition has 4 3-light sashes with glazing bars under flat arches. These flank a 2-panel door with a round fanlight. C19 wooden lattice porch with round hood. Insurance plaque over. Internal: C17 staircase (probably reset, see RCHM description), C17 panelling with moulded through rails and moulded interrupted stiles, ceiling of deep chamfered intersecting beams, other deep chamfered beams, some reed and plaster ceilings, and an Ionic doorcase in front room. Brick wall to road with a stone coping and gate piers with ball finials. The Dorset poet, William Barnes, worked as a solicitor's clerk here for 3 years.
