Listed Building: EAST WEARE CAMP (381981)

PORTLAND SY6873 INCLINE ROAD, H.M. Naval Base 969-1/3/156 (West side) 21/09/78 East Weare Camp II Built as detention barracks, converted to coastguard use in 1914, now (1991) disused and becoming dilapidated. c 1880. Snecked and dressed rubble, some slate roofs remain. A quadrangle of buildings set well up on the slopes of The Verne, and c 175m to W of Incline Road, but approached by climbing zig-zag route. Central entrance on SW side through wide semicircular arch in heavy pecked rusticated quoins, voussoirs and key under heavy roll-mould coping; set slightly forward from and rising above remainder of enclosure wall about 35m square, with projecting corner units S and N. SW front has various blocked openings, and lintels raised above inserted gun ports; iron plates cover musket slits. Wall crowned in heavy roll-mould cornice. The entrance is flanked within by hipped slate-roofed workshops with cast iron-windows, and the entry arch is repeated on the courtyard side. NE side flanked by flat-roofed barracks blocks, lower openings blocked, series of deep-set cast iron windows at upper level. The enclosure walls to NW and SE sides are ramped down from the workshops to the barracks. Some later work including outlook tower at E corner of courtyard, part of coastguard observation point. The buildings not completely inspected, but they are subject to vandalism and becoming overgrown. Listing NGR: SY6968373692
