Description

WEYMOUTH SY6778NE RODWELL ROAD 873-1/23/253 (West side) Boundary wall, railings, gate pier and plaque to east of Netherton Nursing Home GV II Gate pier, dwarf boundary wall with railings, commemorative plaque. Mid C18 with 1851 plaque. Wall and plaque in Portland ashlar, cast-iron railings. The pier, approx 2.3m high, is in banded ashlar, with a capping on modillion cornice, and moulded base. The dwarf wall, in large stone block with weathered coping, dies to the pavement on the left, and rises to approx 0.45m to the right, where it curves back towards the main front; here there is a C20 gate, but the wall carries simple railings. The plain stone plaque stands on the wall coping at the right-hand end, with an inscription in capitals: THIS INSCRIPTION IS INSERTED TO COMMEMORATE THE DISINTERESTED CONDUCT OF JOHN CREE ESQUIRE A MAGISTRATE FOR THIS COUNTY BY WHOSE UNTIRING EXERTIONS AIDED BY A SUBSCRIPTION THIS DANGEROUS APPROACH TO WEYMOUTH WAS WIDENED TEN FEET MAY 1ST 1851.
