Description

TOLPUDDLE SY 7994 THE GREEN 15/182 Tolpuddle Manor House (formerly listed as 26.1.56 Manor House) GV II* Manor house. Dated over entrance, IVNA 1696. Front wall of rough tooled ashlar stone, left end wall of brick and flint banding, right end, and rear walls of brick - the latter appears a C18 or C19 refacing. Slate roof with stone eaves courses and coped gables. Externally projecting brick end stacks. 2 storeys and attic. Gabled porch, with ball finial, has moulded round-arched opening with keystone, and moulded imposts and jambs. String course above keystone. Inner doorway with depressed 4-centred arch and 6-panel door. On the main facade, string courses at first floor level and above first floor windows. Ground floor has 4 stone mullioned and transomed windows - wave moulded mullions, and lead lights. 5 similar windows on first floor. On both floors, some lights blocked to suit later partitions. Attic has 2 hipped dormers with casements with centre horizontal bar. Rear wing at right end of one storey and attic - contemporary or slightly later, containing early heavy oak door. Adjoining this a single storey slated wing of c1800. Interior much altered in C18 and later. Altered C18 closed string stair, with alternately turned and twisted balusters and newels in the form of composite pilasters with reversed volutes (the "Blandford" Capital). In 2 ground floor rooms re-used moulded stone fireplace surrounds, reputedly from Fonthill. (RCHM Monument 2. Dorset Vol III) Listing NGR: SY7908894446
