Description

ST 6601 CERNE ABBAS LONG STREET, (centre) 11/81 The Royal Oak Inn 28.1.55 GV II Public House, on site of market and therefore infill. Early C16 core, with C18 and C19 alterations. Chalk, stone and flint rubble walls, with dressed stone quoins. Thatch roof with gable end to west, raised eaves and gable end to east. C18 brick stacks (3), in gable positions. Two storeys and dormers. South elevation, 2- and 3-light wood casements, with glazing- bars. One 3-light casement has lead lights, wooden lintels. Two blocked door positions towards left hand end, and in right hand part. Present entrance on west gable, beside external stack. Plank door, C20, with 2 lights in the upper half, stone slate roof over and 2 fixed windows either side, forming small porch. Interior: moulded and compartmented ceiling-beams, C16. Open stone fireplace, part blocked, with chamfered jambs and 4-centred head, C16. (RCHM Dorset. I, p81(10)) Listing NGR: ST6660301181
