Abstract/Summary

An archaeological survey of the sea wall to the south-east of the castle showed that the wall was originally faced on both sides with fine ashlar stone, but that the facing was removed sometime before 1835, leaving only the wall's rubble and mortar core standing above ground level. The close similarity between the construction of the wall and that of the adjacent castle perimiter wall suggests that the wall is contemporary in date with the castle (built 1540).
