Abstract/Summary
An account of the observations during the construction of a new surface water conduit in 1911-12 along Salisbury Walks, South Walks, and Bowling Alley Walks. Along Salisbury Walks an old ground surface was found beneath 3-5ft of chalk rubble. Part of the ditch was observed along South Walks between Culliford Road and Acland Road. The area was disturbed closer to South Street. A ditch was picked up between South Street and Trinity Street, but was not thought to be Roman but probably 17th century civil war in date. Along Bowling Alley Walk the pipe was tunnelled. The report also considers the earlier accounts of observations and work on the defences by Moule and Miles-Barnes.
