Abstract/Summary
This contour survey represents the second stage of works carried out under Schedule Monument Consent on three barrows at Holme Lane, East Holme, Purbeck (County Monument 698). This work was preceded by the clearance of woody undergrowth from the three monuments carried out under archaeological supervision and will be followed by limited excavation, to cause the minimum feasible damage to below-grounds archaeological deposits, and by the laying of a protective covering over the barrow mounds and their ditches. In view of the further works to be undertaken, this report is a preliminary statement only, comprising the results of the contour survey work. A fuller report will be prepared on completion of the full evaluation programme.
The contour survey of the three barrows was undertaken between 28 June and 2 July 1991. All three barrows and the area of cleared vegetation between and around the monuments were surveyed at horizontal intervals of between 0.5 and 1.0 metres. This was considered an adequate coverage to produce a detailed contour survey of the monument at 0.10 metres intervals or less.
