Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeological was commissioned in April 1993 to undertake an archaeological evaluation of 0.56 ha of land, centred on SZ 0205 7975, near Prospect Farm, to the north-west of Swanage. The archaeological evaluation was required in response to a proposal by Wessex Water plc, for the construction of a sewage treatment works at the site. The aim of the evaluation was to assess the archaeological content of the proposed development area. Three trenches, totalling 113 m2, were machine-excavated and represent a 2% sample of the area of the proposed development. The trenches did not reveal any archaeological features of deposits , although four pieces of struck flint, probably of prehistoric date, were recovered from the topsoil and subsoil. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, there is no significant archaeological content to the proposed development area.
