Date/Year 1992

Abstract/Summary

‘A preliminary field assessment of the proposed supermarket site was carried out in May 1992. The work comprised fieldwalking and the excavation of trial pits and trenches across the site. Displaced artefacts, recovered from the field surface and from the topsoil in the machine-excavated trenches, date from the later prehistoric to Medieval periods. No subsoil features were observed which pre-date the use of the area as an army camp during the first quarter of the century. Although the survey area lies within 200 metres north east of a late Iron Age and Romano-British industrial settlement excavated in 1986, there is no evidence for the continuation of the site into the proposed development area.’
