Abstract/Summary
AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation on land to the rear of 36 North Street, Wareham during January 1998 in advance of proposed residential development.
The evaluation revealed a dark post medieval soil horizon up to 1.4m deep, sealing a buried soil horizon 0.4m deep and containing 10th-12th century pottery. Condition dicatated that only 30% of this buried soil horizon could be excavated down to the natural subsoil. No cut features were revealed in the natural. Wall footings in trenches 1 and 3 were of post medieval date. No evidence for medieval or earlier features was revealed, although it is possible that the plot fronting on to North Street has potential for medieval settlement activity as was revealed in the adjacent St Martin's House excavations.
