Title | Summary Report on Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment at Lower Bond Street, Melcombe Rregis, Weymouth, Dorset. |
Author/Originator | Whitehead, B |
Date/Year | 1997 |
Abstract/Summary
Southern Archaeological Services Ltd conducted a desk-based assessment of the known archaeology of the area around Lower Bond Street, Melcombe Regis, Weymouth, Dorset, using documentary sources held in various archives, as part of the archaeological evaluation of the site. The assessment was undertaken on behalf of BDG McColl, agents for Shearer Property Group and Miller Developments. The assessment showed that the site les in an area of particular significance for the history of Mediaeval Melcombe Regis. Although no archaeology has previously been recorded on the site, this may be partly because little recent work has been done in Melcombe so below-ground remains may still survive on the site. The most important aspects of the site are the northern limit and defences of Mediaeval Melcombe, which run across the middle of the site, possible waterlogged deposits below made ground along its western edge and the possibility of locating Mediaeval cellaring or below-ground remains of buildings. The possibility of Prehistoric or Roman remains being recovered is also noted.
