Abstract/Summary

'Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Mr R Lasseter to undertake an archaeological desktop study of the site of a proposed tennis court at Corton Farm, Portesham, Dorset centred on SY 636 854. The purpose of the assessment was to collate information on known or potential archaeological resources within the proposed development area, so that an informed planning decision may be reached. The study covered both the proposal site and a wider area to assess the general context of the site. It confirmed that the proposed development area lies within the manorial site of Corton which dates from AD 1089 or earlier. The site of the proposed tennis court is currently occupied by rough ground and the remains of a former farm building. This building may have disturbed any archaeological deposits. The groundworks required to level the site for the tennis court may have an impact on archaeological deposits. Excavations to a maximum depth of approximately one metre on a third to a half of the proposed site will be required to create a level surface for the tennis court.'
