Abstract/Summary

The excavations appear to have taken place in the 16th-17th century reclamation area of Poole. Structural remains which appear to be post-medieval probably relate to property boundary and house walls. No natural sand was uncovered. The origin of the overlying soils is not known. Observation of the trenches did not reveal a coherent layer of oyster shells to equate with the Dark Age or post medieval middens of Poole. Neighbouring developments at Seaway House and the Jolly Sailor recorded oyster shell deposits at shallow depths. However it is possible that such layers exist at a much greater depth. This may account for the greater resistance encountered by the piling.
